Hello, I am Savvas Verdis

I am a visual artist and public policy prof, living and working in London. My letter-pressing practice is split between making giant letter-wheels that look like strange typesetting machines, which I later ink and roll across canvases, walls and streets, to effectively “paint with language". Each enormous wheel is carved with letters or slogans: spinning it imprints words like lines of a poem or bold graffiti. This method turns writing into an act of drawing: text is not only read but seen as a rhythmic pattern and dance. My works are often collaborations using words from poets and song writers and live mainly in private collections, public buildings and the permanent collection of the Obama Presidential Centre in Chicago.
